Arthur Dent is literally the last man on Earth. Well...not really so much on Earth, exactly. Because Arthur isn't on Earth anymore. There is no Earth anymore. It was destroyed by the Vogon Constructor Fleet to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. Seconds before the Earth's destruction, Arthur was rescued by his friend Ford Prefect, who turned out not to be, as he had originally claimed, an out-of-work actor from Guildford but a roving Guide writer from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse. Now Arthur roams the galaxy, depending only on his wits, his towel, and the highly entertaining but completely unreliable Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, searching for a passable cup of tea.
